Today I'm sharing the star player in my skin care routine, a DIY all natural progesterone cream! This one product replaces all others serving as a mild deodorant, body lotion, face cream, lip balm, aftershave, light sun protection, after-sun cream, inflammation calming cream, and relaxing massage oil (yes, I made a batch for my massage therapist)! Optional- you could also add a few drops of Frankincense essential oil to fight aging skin.
Ingredients:
♥ about 3 ounces virgin coconut oil (like this)
♥ 15-20 drops of Progest E* (natural progesterone in vitamin E)
♥ 8 drops Lavender essential oil (where to find high quality essential oils at wholesale prices)
♥ (optional) 5 drops Frankincense essential oil (PS I don't recommend using low quality essential oils on your skin since you could have an adverse reaction to additives! I trust these oils.)
Process:
1) Turn on the oven to 350, let the oven warm for 5 minutes and turn off.
2) Put a glass jar containing the coconut oil in the oven for about 5-10 minutes to melt (oven should be warm, but turned off at this point).
3) As soon as oil is melted, add Progest E and essential oil.
4) Stir, and put in a cool, dark place to cool, where the coconut oil will harden.
5) Keep in your bathroom or bedside for everyday use, and watch this light progesterone cream replace your everyday products!
Notes on Progest E:
Progest E is a natural progesterone dissolved in vitamin E for superior delivery formulated by Dr. Ray Peat, PhD. Progesterone is an anti-inflammatory hormone that is protective & healing to the body, and perfect for the skin. "For tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis, sunburn, etc., progesterone in vitamin E can be applied locally after a little olive oil has been put on the skin to make it easier to spread the progesterone solution" Ray Peat, PhD.

What's your beauty secret? Please tell me about it in the comments!
Sasha
Hi Catherine, I recently found your site and i love everything about it. I am so excited to find someone who is a nutritionist and respects dr. Peat's principles. I've been following Dr. Ray Peat recommendations to heal my hormonal peri-menopausal problems and succeeded to the large extend. However, i gained a lot of weight in the process (adding orange juice and milk to my diet) and unable to loose it. Can you help? If you say yes, i will schedule a consult over skype. Thank you!
Catherine Crow
Hi Sasha, thank you for your kind words! Please sign up for a free consult and we can chat 🙂 Either clicking the right top sidebar "Creating Nutritional Wealth" or via the "Let's chat" contact form will get you going. Looking forward, Catherine

I have PCOS, do you have any suggestions for a natural method to help it?
Catherine
Hi Claire,
Finding hormonal balance through dietary changes is the best approach to PCOS in my opinion.

Becca
where would one be able to purchase progest e?
Catherine
@Becca-- Do a google search for "Kenogen Progest E." There are a few online vendors that sell it.
Georgia Beckman
Thank you for posting this recipe. I was just about to ask where to by the Progest E & then I saw your response to another individual's question. Thank you so much!
loretta Quinn
Is that just a Vit E capsule?
Amy
Could this be made with just plain Vitamin E?
Catherine
It could, but it would not have the benefits of progesterone. Coconut oil and vitamin E would still make a great moisturizer.

Kenogen Progest E causes cancer? I looked it up so now I'm confused.
Catherine
I think there is a lot more to the progesterone story than the required WARNING on progesterone products sold in the state of California...
"Many progesterone products have been taken off the market because of California's warning signs and labels, and as a result many women are having to rely on their physicians for progesterone. Too many physicians know only what the pharmaceutical companies want them to know about progesterone and other hormones that had been available for decades in places such as health food stores." -Ray Peat, PhD
I recommend doing your own research and coming to your own opinion. You can read the about the benefits of progesterone from Dr. Ray Peat himself here:

That's a question for your doctor to answer.

Peat suggests using a Progesterone blend for PMS only at the start of ovulation-menstruation---Would using it full time reduce effects for PMS or will it not make a difference?
Catherine
I'm personally not a huge fan of oral progesterone supplementation. I think it's better to correct the causes of low progesterone through diet.
Chris
What benefits have you seen since using the Progest E oil in your cream. I am not having any hormone issues yet and I do't want to be creating any problems for myself.
gretchen
Was there a link for where to purchase or find Progest E? I can't seem to find one anywhere. Thank you! This recipe sounds wonderful!
Catherine
Hi Gretchen,
I didn't post a link to purchase, but you can just google "Kenogen Progest E" and you should be able to find an online retailer.
Thanks for reading!
Catherine
Katie
I recently purchased Progest E and am very excited to make this cream. I was wondering if this is safe to take all month long? I know that I have low progesterone and you say you should correct the causes through diet. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Katie
I just bought the Progest E and I am excited to make this cream. Is this safe for someone to use all month long? I have low progesterone and you say to handle the cause of that through diet. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
Catherine
The tiny amount of Progest E in this recipe and used only on the skin should not effect cycles.

Since you are already using Young Living, have you considered their Progessence Plus Serum (bioidentical progesterone)? You don't have to rotate it and it's safe on teens as well! LOVE your recipe!
Catherine
Hi Sarah,
I'm actually not a fan of wild yam extract, because of possible toxicity and the body's inability to convert this sourcing to actual progesterone usable by the body.
Thanks for reading!
Catherine

Hi Catherine, I ran into your blog while searching for info on progesterone supplements. I'm sorry but I'm a little confused. You said you're not a fan of wild yam derived progesterone. I am looking at the product description of Progest-E which states it is derived from wild yams.
https://www.longnaturalhealth.com/product/Dr-Peats-Progest-E-Complex-28-ml/PGE
Catherine
Hi R,
I was referring to products labeled and sold as "wild yam extract or diosgenin" that is NOT chemically synthesized into real progesterone. USP progesterone can be derived from wild yam, but according to my research it needs to be chemically synthesized to work in the human body. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for the clarification, Catherine. Now I know what to look for when I shop for progesterone.

Just made this cream! I'm wondering if there are an testimonies of eliminating age spots?
K
Do you have any other sources besides Ray Peat that you use to determine the effect and healthiness of this serum? Just trying to cover all the bases, I know about Ray Peat but would like more information on Progest E, should you have it.
Melissa
Would this work for melisma as well?
Molly
I have a brand called Progesta-Care, think some of this in the cream would be safe/work?
Sharon
Could I use rosehip seed oil in stead of coconut oil? I like that oil better on my particular skin type.

Thank you for your disclaimers. You may want to add to them though. I had progesterone receptive breast cancer - not estrogen receptive which is most common. This would have been a bad choice for me! As with all things - we need to be aware of the natural items we put on our bodies and tues them with caution also!
Eve
You are right, Theresa, and I'm glad that you reference cancer as a thing of the past and wish you many healthy years ahead.
As someone who is not undergoing cancer treatment, I don't fear small amounts of bio-identical progesterone, especially the tiny amounts used here as a skin treatment..
Much of the research on cancer confuses that with various synthetic progestins that effect the body in some of the same ways yet may have unknown unique effects on the body. The papers below which are available online are a good example of how little we know about these synthetic drugs:
Hypothesis: Progesterone Primes Breast Cancer Cells for Cross-Talk with Proliferative or Antiproliferative Signals." Molecular Endocrinology, 13(6), pp. 829–836
Genomic and non-genomic actions of progestogens in the breast
A.O. Mueck,X. Ruan,H. Seeger,T. Fehm,H. Neubauer
The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
July 2014
Perhaps we don't know everything about our own endogenous progesterone.. but I don't think there is even one study that looked at higher endogenous levels of progesterone being linked to a higher risk of breast cancer. I believe the risk was noticed only in women taking synthetic hormone replacement. I don't think a risk has been found in women using bio-identical progesterone, either, however I would personally avoid it if I had PR+ breast cancer cells in my breast.

This page has a broken link [https://butternutrition.com/my-all-in-one-secret-miracle-cream/] to amazon for the coconut oil. Just thought you'd like to know...

Thank you.

Hi Catherine. I have hashimoto, high estrogen, low cortiso, low progesterone and melasma. Yeah! I'm a mess. I read you don't like oral progesterone suplementation. I use desiccated thyroid hormones, adrenogen, DIM for estrogen, and progesterone orally. That is what my inTegra time Doctor prescribed... any insight?

Is the lavender oil just for scent or is there a therapeutic quality to it? I ask because I happen to be one of the few weirdos of the world who does not enjoy lavender 🙂

Catherinr,
Should the cream be refrigerated? Thanks!

My doctor recommended I use an external vaginal cream. They can be over $200. Will this work in the labia areas?
